1973 Johnson 9.5Hp 73R Not shifting into reverse

I have my families old 1973 Johnson 9.5Hp. I cleaned it and it starts and runs perfect now except it will not shift into reverse except once in a awhile. I think the shifting system needs repair. Where do I start not knowing this part of the motor system. I did order the 2-cyl, repair book today. How do I first inspect and then to know what parts I need? From the looks of what I see nothing looks worn but have not taken anything apart. I am a novice on this motor and don't want to creat more problems as it operates great right now except for the shifting into reverse.

Thank you for your help

I do not know if this the problem with your motor, but I had a 9.9 with the same issue. What happened is that the shift rod set screw(if that's what you call it) down in the lower unit had slipped. I cracked the lower unit loose, as if changing water pump, then re-adjusted the linkage. I have had no shift problems since. I suspected the lower unit area because my dad had mentioned that it had a brand new water pump and had not been started since the impeller replacement.

Thaddix,
Thanks Ijust checked this tonight and it DID slip a small fraction. I adjusted it which now looks like it might do the trick. It was already once in awhile shifting so this might have done the trick. Dry run it appears to work. Although in the process of looking at it and cleaning the linkage in this area it noticed a link crack. It does appear to be holding but, I might look to change the linkage. I'm not touching the linkage unless it doesn't work LOL.

Thanks much
