1973 Fastwin 20hp thermostat holes

I was wondering if anyone can help me, on my Fastwin under the actual thermostat, inside the housing there are two holes, one at the top of the housing and one at the bottom, well the hole at the top seems to be blocked so does anyone know where it goes and what it's for, really don't want to have to take the head off, I've managed to get a lot of crap out of it but just put some water down the hole and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere, the bottom hole is fine.

Guess work can be disasterous.

Guess work can be disasterous. Remove the cylinder head so that you can inspect all of the water passages. Head gaskets aren't that expensive.

I figured the same, took the head off the other day and the hole goes nowhere but the head was FULL of crap so very glad I took it apart, also a bit of corrosion in there around the outside edges of the chamber wall so might be looking at a new head. Had a couple of bent bolts too, does that mean the engine has overheated and warped or I just bent them removing them because a couple of them were really tight.

"Never ever saw a bent bolt.... plenty of broken ones though. I'd suspect that it bent when being removed if it came out with great difficulty.
