I was the lucky recipient of a 1973 50 hp 2-cylinder Lark motor. The guy giving it away told me that he thought it worked, so I found an old boat and trailer to put it on. I am a heavy duty mechanic, but have never worked on outboards before. Yesterday I took it out to the lake to try it out, and found that it had very little power, and pushed the boat along at about 5-10 mph, but no more. Just as i reached the other side of the lake cruising along at half throttle, it kicked once or twice and got up and fairly flew across the water! This lasted for about 10 seconds, then dropped off again. I shut it off and pulled the top (#1?) spark plug wire off (Won't do that again after reading threads here) and tried restarting with no luck. Replaced wire, removed #2 and retried. Fired right up like before. Got it home and swapped the coils. The problem did not move, so I suspect the power pack, but is this typical of a power pack, since it comes and goes? I have inspected the wires for something grounding out on the block, etc. and can't see anything. Should I buy a power pack, or maybe a DVA adapter and go deeper?
