I have a "73 Evinrude 9.5hp. It has sat in storage for quite a few years after the father-in-law passed.
Well I got it out on Sat. dropped it in the tank and started to pull. Dead in the water. After playing with the spark plugs and some Gum Out, then one coil and then two condensers. It happened, one short pull and it came to life.
Now what to do......
Observations..... when running in tank, water was dripping out from starboard side below lower cowling. I did install clear gas line from pump to carb and saw that the pump was working well as the line was full after a few minutes. The water pump was sending a good amount of water out the water tube. After removing motor from tank, I dropped the lower unit plugs and drained the oil; it seemed less than full and was a caramel milky color with water drops on top of the oil. My observation of the prop shows it to be loose on the shaft with most of the slop toward the hub. I am going to pull the prop and do an inspection tomorrow.
Any suggestions to the following questions would be appreciated: 1) can water leak from pump into lower unit 2) if plugs are sealed with plastic washer, where else can water come from....prop seal? 3) any comments on the water dripping from the cowling?
