1973 Evinrude 6hp water pump

I think I can change out water pump. My question is do I just unhook the shifter linkage at the top ANY ADVICE WOULD BE APPRECIATED Mike

Remove lower unit bolts. Drop unit enough so that you can remove just one 3/8" bolt from the brass shift connector.

When re-installing th elower unit, make sure that the groove in the shift rod lines up perfectly with the hole in the brass shift connector.

If the water pump screws are really tight.... use a hand held propane torch to heat the aluminum around them to help free them.

Don't you have to remove the powerhead on that motor to get to the shiftrod connection?

No you don't.--------That was true for earlier 5.5 HP motors.-----------You will have to rotate the flywheel slowly while dropping the lower unit.--------Drive pin for the upper seal must go thru a slot.
