"Just got this motor, been sit

"Just got this motor, been sitting for awhile. Put it on the lake today, motor will start, rev up, then die out. Seems like it is choking out when it dies. Smell of gas is strong, primer bulb will go soft. When I restart the motor, it will rev really high, then run for a couple of minutes in gear, then die again. Any suggestions on what to do to get this motor running right? I did drain the plastic gas tank, cleaned it up, and now letting it air dry to make sure no water will be in the new gas. Also, I did order a rebuild kit for the carb from engine marine, will have the mechanic rebuild the carb when it comes in."

"I don't know, that is why I am having the mechanic rebuild the carb. I do not have a clue on what to do mechanically with this motor. I will do like jwb suggests and get a service done on the motor, sounds like a few dollars on prevention can save a lot of future problems.
Put new gas/oil (50:1) back in the tank, still choked out and died. Waiting on marine engine to send me the rebuild kit, hopefully will be in this week"
