"hello all.
i have a 1973 135 silver starflite that i fully restored 2 years ago. it had the dual piston tilt/trim on the outside of the motor bracket...i'm sure you all are familiar with it.
well, they are rather impossible to find these days. mine hasn't ever really worked right, and i junked it last year (should've parted it on ebay haha). in any event...
i have a line on some newer tilt units that i think i can modify to fit my motor (or modify my motor to hold unit). they are the 3 piston type that sit inside the motor bracket. from anywhere from a 90hp up to a 150 or 200HP. can this be done? if so, which HP would be the best fit and still be strong enough to lift the 135 (300lb dry weight), or all they all the same?
would it be a better idea to get one that has the transom motor mount assembly attached to it still? the only thing that would require is 7.5" between the inside ears (where my existing motor's tilt pin/steering cable would slide through, and be big enough to house my steering cable). i have seen some that have a tilt pin and then the steering tube is actually set in front of that. mine has only one hole. 7.5", thats the width of the actual space between the inside edges of the ears on the existing motors transom mount.
is this possible? are there any other suggestions? i know CMC makes an aftermarket unit, but it costs over 600 bucks most places and would require me to buy a new steering cable.
i need modification advice
thanks in advance.
