1973 Evinrude 115 hp Overcharging problem

hey you guys i was looking for some advise on what to do with my engine it is overcharging to 17 volts at mid to high rpm and at idle charges at 13 volts whats going on? thanks

The simple fact is that it does not have a voltage regulator, just a simple rectifier. What you observe is normal.

Switching some load on, lights for example, should pull the volts down a bit if necessary.

do they make a regulator that i can install? or how can i get the voltage down below 14 volts. my VHF radio cant handle the high voltage it keeps telling me high voltage. the battery is a couple months old and i check the water every couple weeks. what can i do?
