1973 85hp evinrude

A factory service manual would be a good investment as they have the wiring diagrams. Make sure the solenoid is for marine use.

Describe the tilt/trim unit you have on that 1973 engine. OMC did not come out with a Tilt/Trim unit until 1974 and that consisted of a very expensive electric motor that say on the outer side of the starboard transom bracket, and there were two lift cylinders... one on each side of both transom brackets.

What is the model number of that engine?

We need to know this information before we can help.

How many wires lead directly to the electric motor, right at the electric motor? If you can tell what color the wires are at the electric motor, that would help greatly.
