1973 85HP (857HE) Flywheel

Struggling with the most basic things here, but this is my first Chrysler as I mostly use Evinrudes. But my flywheel is pretty stuck on, and I cannot seem to find the size of the bolts that screw into the top of the flywheel to pull it off with the typical flange-type puller. I can fit those claw pullers on it, but I do not want to risk chipping chunks of aluminum off the upper flywheel or damaging its teeth.

While I'm here, I might as well ask for any opinions anyone might have on this outboard and whether I'm in for an ok time or a bad time.
 
I actually worked for a Chrysler/ Johnson dealership in the last century when I was a kid. As with Chrysler in the 1970's they were always in third place behind GM and Ford. In the outboard world it was OMC and Mercury. I always liked how their 3 and 4 cylinder engines ran. Started quickly, idled smooth and made good power. They were very simple engines. Leaping 50 years forward, parts support has dwindled to a trickle. Repairing outboards has evolved into replacing outboards.; the challenge is with what? 4 strokes cost stupid money now and their built in obsolescent

As I recall, way back on my 90 hp the bolts were pretty small. Seems like they were 1/4" or quite possibly 3/16". I used grade 8 bolts with my puller. I turned the flywheel nut upside down and threaded it back onto the crank threads to keep from damaging the crank threads.
The puller by itself was a losing battle. I ended up using heavy brass mallet smacks multiple times on the puller bolt to get that balancer lose.

Good advice. DO NOT use one of those claw pullers. You will simply break chunks off.
Use a harmonic balance puller, (about $20 used or on sale).
Do as Dave said, make sure it’s level, ie all bolts turned equally. Grease the main Center bolt, the turn it down tightly. Even on little 6hp motors I’ve sometimes had to turn quite a lot of torque on that Center bolt.
If it doesn’t pop, give a good whack to the top ofthe Center bolt. Tighten some more, give another whack.
