1973 850 Seal replacement question

Removed the flywheel (yes used the correct tool and flywheel holder) to replace the stator and found the crank seal weeping oil.

My question is, Can the bearing cap be removed without splitting the case? The books I have only show the front bearing cap removed after the block has been split.

Why do that? Punch a hole (or two) in the metal part of the seal, screw in a sheet metal screw, and yank it out. Then tap in a new one. Piece of cake!

This is what I would normally do if a normal seal was looking at me, but it looks like there is a metal shield that is pressed in above the seal that might keep any debries from the timing belt from getting to the seal. I tried pulling at it with a pick and it didn't budge. I don't see this shield in any part brake down I have found, but it is there. Any ideas?

There is no shield on that seal !

Thats what the part brake down says, but there is one there. Could this be a update that was done when the power head was rebuilt? I will take a picture and post it. It is in a friends shop and I will be out of town tomorrow, so it will be Monday night till I can post a picture.

Question, Do I need to use a site like Photobucket to upload pictures?

No. but your photos have to be VERY small.

I think that "sheild" of yours is the seal itself. If not, punch a hole (or two) in it for te sheet metal screw(s) and pull it out, then the seal. You can 'bodywork' it back into shape with a hammer and re-install it after the new seal.
