1973 50hp evinrude fuel system problem

I have 50hp evinrude 50373R on my boat and I'm having a issue that I really dont know where to start to fix it, the motor will start and idel for 10-15 seconds and then the RPM will start to go sky high all on its on and then the motor will just die. I'm a new first time boat owner and I really know nothing about repairing it and this will be the first of many many repairs this 1974 skeeter will need.

thank you, someone mentioned that it may be a bad diapham in fuel pump, ive been looking for a rebuild kit but not having any luck
 
Facts.-----It may not have the original pump.-------So take it apart carefully.-----Inspect it.------Then perhaps use the shape of the diaphragm and compare that to available kits.

Amazon,quote the model #,they will probably have a fair range of prices,cheapest one is about$15.Chinese I know but had one on my 40hp for about 2 years with no problem.
 
Have you tested the motor while squeezing the primer bulb? If this action keeps it running, then we can suspect the pump. It could be a bad primer bulb too. Did the problem start after a long storage period? Have you checked the screen in the fuel pump?
