1973 25RL73 A CHARGING

MAYTAG

New member
Good afternoon. I have purchased a 1973 Johnson 25rl73 motor that came with a 14 ft jon boat, and am looking for info on this motor, such as, does this motor charge the battery. I have the service manual, but it's not very clear. I am accustomed to working on older Harleys, so i am somewhat familiar with motor function and diagnostics.
I have to fix the pull starter as the pawl was broken, and I am awaiting a new spring for the pawl. The electric start will turn it over fine, but I want to fix the recoil first before trying it out. It's way cold for fooling around in the water right now to not have all working properly.
Thanks.

No, 25RL73 is rope start. Not even if someone added elect start kit. No battery charging in those early models.

I have no idea. But why bother?
A fully charged quality battery would probably last a week or more in a remote location even with daily usage.
It's not like a 14' jon boat is full of heavy current draw accessories.

It is possible , if you update to a newer ( ignition ) version of this 22 cubic inch model----Why do you want battery charging ?----A good sized battery will crank it for many , many starts certainly more than a week-----.-What is your location?-----What budget do you have ?

I just want to be able to charge the batteries as I will also be using a trolling motor and will need lights as I will be operating during the night. Gotta get out on the water early for duck hunting. And, I also like to fish at night.
But, it really may not matter as has been stated. If it really becomes an issue I will just get a newer motor.

This one has a live well with aerator and 80ftlb trolling motor, and I will need lights for night time. At this time, I won't be out much at night, mostly in the mornings heading for a duck blind. Of course, after it gets light, I won't need the lights....

If you are installing new lights, use LED, much less current draw.
Isn't 80LB trolling motor 24 volts? You won't need that kind of thrust for a 14' jon boat. In my opinion a 55LB thrust with 1 deep cycle battery will be just fine.

I'm absolutely using LEDs. But I have to check the trolling motor. I got two new deep cycles with the boat, but have yet to properly check everything out. The weather here in Central Pa has not been conducive to doing much with it so far. I've only had it a couple of days, and being retired, I have some time to fool around with it.
But thanks for your input. I appreciate it.
