"I'm pretty much stumped with this motor. I had the flywheel off, but I put it back on with the #1 piston at TDC and aligned the timing mark on the flywheel with the one on the motor. I then rotated the engine .208" BTDC, and sure enough, the timing mark lined up at 33 degrees, just where it should be. I hooked up the fuel, and turned the engine over with the electric start, but it wouldn't fire. Here's what I have done:

-compression check revealed 115 lbs in top cylinder, 114 lbs in bottom cylinder.
-pulled both spark plugs and visually saw good spark from both plugs.
-poured fresh fuel into cylinders and turned engine over.

The engine would turn over all day, and occasionally backfire through the exhaust.

What the heck do I do next? First, Am I correct that the top cylinder is the #1 cylinder. My Clymer's manual didn't specify that. Next, what do I need to check for linkage adjustments or electrical currency, resistance, etc? I am truly confused with this motor.

Also, the flywheel has two timing marks. One is half the length as the other one. Do I use the longer mark for lining up the timing?"

have you verified that the &#3

have you verified that the " good " spark that you have will jump a gap of 7/16" or more. Have you tried to start the motor by switchng the plug wires???

"well, one of the plug wires i

"well, one of the plug wires is only long enough to reach the top cylinder. Is the top cylinder the number one cylinder?

Also, I know the spark would jump about 1/4"."

"top cyl is #1. Put your hand over the carb and crank engine, verify that it is trying to draw air in, if not the bottom seal might be bad. A little history would help, has this motor ever ran with you? Did it just quit or what?"

"Jeep,

Put a timing light on the nuber one wire and verify that the timing is right. That backfire suggests that the timing may be way off.

"JB-
I bought the motor 2 yea

"JB-
I bought the motor 2 years ago when it was in pieces. I got it back together and it ran pretty well. Last year, I couldn't get it running at all. I took the flywheel off and didn't mark the correct position to put it back on. Also, I don't feel it is a problem with the carb as it wouldn't even fire with new fuel dumped into the cylinders.

Tony-
Wouldn't I need the engine running to verify the timing is correct? I can't getit running. It seems as if I put the flywheel back on correctly and timing should be on. I set the top piston at TDC, and aligned the mark on the flywheel with the zero timing mark on the engine bracket. When I rotated the engine .208" BTDC, the mark lined up at 33 degrees, right where it should be.

The only question I'd have now is which mark on the flywheel do I use for setting the timing? There is a 1" mark and a 1/2" mark. They are directly opposite each other and both above the flywheel magnets."

"Jeep,

The timing light wou

"Jeep,

The timing light would work when cranking the engine.

I believe the longer mark is supposed TDC for #1.

Tony"
