I Have a Model 110 1973 Serial # 3737257 that a friend gave to me. The Motor was laying in the edge of the yard at the house my friend bought so I have no history. Pulled the cowl and found the wires from the points to the coils the insulation was breaking down. I replaced the wire with ordinary auto wire being told by several this was sufficient which I still doubt. The Thunderbolt ignition system can reach 1000 volts per service manual, searching everywhere and told by several mechanics the auto wire would be fine.
OK here we go, compression is 110 on # 1 and 108 in # 2 so compression is good. Rebuilt the carb. fuel pump and cleaned and set the points to .020, verified with a Simpson 220 and they are fine. Followed the synchronizing procedure to the letter checked and rechecked fuel pump carb. and synch
still bogs on wot. Will start on the first or second pull most every time. Have pulled the plugs and they do not appear excessively wet. The engine also idles very rough. My honest gut feeling tells me the fuel is fine, I am leaning toward the Thunderbolt ignition. What is the easiest way to test it.
Just like most service manuals when you can understand them, you don't need them. I understand how it says to test the coils on the ignition but I also know from experience that is not sure fire. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
