1972 mercury 800 thunderbolt

I just bought a 1972 merc 800 thunderbolt outboard which I was told that sat for about a year,the internal wire harness was shot I rewired the whole thing,I changed the rectifier old one was no good,hooked her up after the third key turn she started right up but the engine reved up way to high I had to shut her down emediatly,everytime I start the engine this happens,can anybody give me a hand with this problem,Thanks

Check operation of throttle cable --------It should pull back to the idle stop when you return the " throttle only " lever to the idle position.

You might have the cables backwards.
