1972 merc. 80hp 800 waterpump question

I am a little concerned about a new water pump.I ordered a new complete water pump and installed it.But before i put the lower unit back on I would like to know is it hard to turn the drive shaft after the new pump is installed.Mine sure is.I didnt wrench it down real hard,it just tight.Any Ideas,I did grease the impeller and cup.

If you idn't lube the impeller with detergent (my favorite) then it can be very hard to turn.

I just replaced my pump on the same model and it was hard to turn. I discovered that the pump base was not seating squarely in the bore. After several attempts of removing and reinstalling the shaft turned freely.
