I got a 1972 85hp johnson the prop spins clockwise in forward and reverse and the boat doesn’t move at all. What would cause this issue.

Motor must be turning / running in order to shift.----Broken driveshaft.---Bad propeller.-----Stripped gears.-----Wrong switch in the control box---No power to the shift switch?----Bad shift wires / solenoids.--What oil is in the lower unit?-----How did this motor work for you last season?

I just bought this boat and it sat up for about 5 years. The motor it self runs good and will throttle up just no movement in water and won’t go into gear

For me this would mean ----Remove lower unit.-------Take lower unit apart for inspection / repair.-----Sounds like the shift piston might be stuck in the bore.-----In my opinion these are simple / reliable / easy to trouble shoot.----Easy to repair.-----When this motor is stopped it should default to forward gear,.----If there is no electrical power it should default to forward gear.
