1972 Evinrude 9.5 sportwin

mine is reading about 55 right now.I heard 60-75 is good compression for this motor. I am troubleshooting a very difficult problem with my motor. I have cleaned and adjusted the carb on this motor. Even the mechanic says the carb is good. spark plug new and getting spark. I have problems with getting this motor to slow idle. two weeks ago it was good. I heard something about these motors needing the crankcase to be completely leak proof or the reed valves will not work properly due to a loss in pressure inside the case and causing running problems. I am wondering how can I check if the crank case is leaking anywhere and would a leak cause a running problem at slower speeds? This motor has run fine the last two months and I cant imagine that all the sudden the compression is bad enough to cause it not to run. It fires on the first pull and will stay running when idle adjust is set higher. I cant get it to idle slow tho.
 
I put a new gasket on today. no scoring of any kind. I dont have my compression guage just yet but I will be checking that next. my question is how wet should the cylinders be I notice when i can see the exaust port there is a little bit of liquid coming out enough that if I tip the motor to the side it will run out the exaust hole. I suspect the motor was running really rich and that was what was causing it to die. I tightened the mixture knob all the way in till the pin seats in the carb then only back it out half a turn till the knob is straight up and down in between lean and rich. I heard it was suppose to be 1 1/2 turns which is what it was at originally when it was dying. motor idles good at 1/2 turn if I back it out to the 1 1/2 turn then it immediately dies.
 
I am adjusting it in a barrel in nuetral. I flipped it to foward and reverse with little change in idle. I almost wanna say there is something wrong with the carb. It has been cleaned extremely well. the carb is not plugged up I dont know what might cause it to give the motor too much fuel tho that doesnt seem logical.
 
I did not change them out the needle is not damaged I will have to look at the seat. If it looks anything like the rest of the carb it should be completely clean This carb looks like it was rebuild not long ago before I cleaned it. the float is made out of styrofoam I dont think its cork but I couldnt even tell you. What do you mean how did I adjust the float? I just bent the metal on the float so it allows the needle to drop out enough without falling out completely
