"I was going to reseal the lower unit this winter, but had a question. I found water in the gearcase (mixed with the lube) and was curious if there is a specific area that these normally leak? I will replace the impeller as well. This is the hydro electric shift model, which has worked flawless for years. I have the factory manual. Any advice on making this job easier.

Thanks"

Drain the gearcase. Reinstall

Drain the gearcase. Reinstall one drain or oil level screw. Apply 7 to 12 psi of air to the remaining screw hole.

This should allow you to hear or view the area of leakage.

"Joe, thanks. Is there a specific tool for doing the pressue test? Should I remove the lower unit to do the test?"

"Of course you'll need a a

"Of course you'll need a air compressor of some kind, and you can use a very short piece of rubber hose (fuel line) between the air nozzle and the lower unit drain hole (or oil level hole).

Since you intend to replace the water pump, the lower unit will be off at some point shortly, and the test would be better performed with the water pump removed.

However, the test can also be performed with the lower unit attached..... any air escaping via the screened water take screen would indicate leakage under the water pump at the upper driveshaft seals.

When time permits, visit my store (copy/paste) at: stores.ebay.com/Evinrude-Johnson-Outboard-Parts-etc?refid=store"

"Will I need special tools to replace the seals and o-rings in the lower unit? My manual shows special tools,to remove the hub carrier, but does this need to be removed just to replace seals?
Thanks"
