1972 evinrude 50 HP no WOT

On muffs,the motor will rev up all the way in neutral and also will rev all the up in gear. Put it in the lake, it will just rev up slightly at wot. Starts to rev up. but then it goes back to slightly above idle.:mad: This boat sat for 2 years before I bought it. Any ideas on what is happening here?

very common........however,...u need to do a compression ck,spark ck,ck fuel for water and if all ok,...do a thorough carb clean and rebuild..also,make sure timing adv is moving fully under flywheel area.

to eliminate a fuel pump prob,try squeezing primer bulb,next time....remember,dirty carbs ruin eng's,....no fuel=no oil.

I was told that the exhaust may be clogged up, but I don't think that's it. The previous owner said he went thru the carbs. ( Maybe 2 years ago; he also admitted he did not know what he was doing!). I guess I will have somebody look at them because I am not that good at carbs.Thank you for reply.

In full agreement with JWB..... the carburetors are clogged, fouled, gummed. Remove, clean and rebuild them.

NOTE: DO NOT rev the engine up in neutral. To do so is inviting a runaway engine with the rpm increasing even when you shut the throttle down. A excellent way to have connecting rods flying thru the side of the crankcase.

Thanks for the info about not revving it up in neutral. off it goes the shop to get the carbs rebuilt.
