" I just bought a 72 2hp that starts ok but really seems to heat up from the engine housing down the top part of the shaft. I'm thinking obviously a cooling failure but where do I start , to fix it myself. Is it as simple as pulling off the bottom end and replacing the impeller or is there a tube running the length of the shaft that could be plugged? If this has been a problem for awhile, could there be internal damage? I have another 74 Johnston and they are great little workhorses for our moosehunts. Anything anyone can tell me about the problem and how to fix it would really be appreciated. Thanks "

"Grayowl.... Drop the lower unit and install a complete water pump kit. There is of course a tube leading from the water pump area to the powerhead area.

With the lower unit removed, you'll be able to apply pressurized air to it to blow out the water passageways. If the upper water tube grommet is restricting the passageway, this air pressure test should reveal that.
