"The easiest shortcut method is to mill the heads.

As you've found, the 318 pistons are way below deck @ TDC. That said, making a significnt ratio increase can require milling a decent amount. There's only so far you can go on one surface before you need to start milling other surfaces to compensate. For example, if you take a lot off of the bottom of the head or top of the block, you may need to mill the intake manifold and/or intake side of the head to ensure proper fit of the manifold.

Although it requires the most work, most engine builders would suggest that the best way to increase compression on a 318 is to install a higher-compression pistion.

Keep in mind too....depending on where you are, marinas aren't always known for having the best quality gas. That's one area where the lower stock compression can be a good thing."

"For a rebuild, I'd suggest the book "How to Rebuild: Small-block Mopar". In addition to good instruction, it has casting number break downs, etc.....so you can get an idea of your baseline specs (head combustion chamber volume, etc.). The book also contains some milling/machine specs for a rebuild.

If you're looking for a more aggressive modifiction specs, there are plenty of build-up articles online (from mild to wild). However, using any of those articles as blue prints or how-to's is taking a leap of faith.....becuase although the final dyno numbers may be impressive, you never know the true outcome (reliability, etc.). Not to mention that these set ups rarely translate to marine use."
