1972 9.5hp in-line fuel filter problem

Hi, I tried installing an in-line fuel filter on a 1972 9.5hp but it will not run with it in place. It is a new filter and I put it close to the fuel pump or just in side the motor cover. If I take the filter out it runs fine. If I put it back in place it will not run. Fuel is getting to the carb and I can see the fuel inside the in-line filter. Any idea why it will not run with the filter in place. I put a carb kit in it last fall, cleaned the fuel pump out, and it runs great without the in-line filter. Is the pump maybe too weak?

The pulse pressures are different coming from the crankcase the neg pressure that pulls the fuel up is allways lower than the pos pressure I bet if you put the filter downstream from the pump it will work?

Thank you. I will try putting the filter on the other side of the pump. It is a smaller hose going to the carb. I did not think of the pump being weaker on the tank side or incoming side of the pump. It already has a wire mesh type of filter on the pump. Maybe that is enough? I was only being on the safe side and put a real filter on it. A new pump is around $100. Thank you for responding and the information. I belive the pump is only a two port type.

Yeah that is a good point about these engines running that way for over 40 years. Sea foam is a good idea. I used it once in another small engine so I will get some soon and run it through this Johnson. I have been reading a lot lately about the ethenal effects on hoses. Not good. It has been helpful joining this forum. I usally just read what other people have posted. I have never owned an outboard before so working on this one has been both fun and a learning experience. I have also replaced the impeller and the lower end lube. All looked very good. Thanks again for the advise.

I put a carb kit and replaced the fuel lines last fall. I could not believe it had a cork float in the carb. I do need a good manual for sure.
