I'm repairing an oil leak on my lower unit and have a couple questions
1. Can someone tell me what is recommended for a thread sealer for the 4 bolts on the bearing housing?
2. My manual shows a screw seal thats no longer available, is this just an o-ring?
3. I've ordered the large o-ring and the seals, is it recommended to replace the shaft bearings while I have it down?
Appreciate any advise.
Ray

What manual do you have ?---O-ring 0317178 appears to be available at a good boat shop.----I would replace bearing above the pinion gear.----Driveshaft bearing housing or propshaft bearing housing screws ?

Thanks Racerone,
The manual I have does not have part numbers, I'm sure it not a factory service manual. I guess because the seals are not available the part number for the seals are not listed. The screw (its actually a bolt) from online parts look up is #0316564. Its the propshaft/ bearing housing. My manual calls for perfect searler #4, can you tell me what is a replacement for that?
Thanks Ray

Seals are available for that simple gearcase.----Use permatex aviation sealer on the o-rings.----Nothing on the threads !

Sir, I have not pulled the lower unit, only removed the bearing housing.....your recommendation to replace the bearing above the pinion gear???
Yes I have the shaft seals but cannot find the so called screw seals, you say use sealer on the o-rings so I take it these seals are o-rings?
Thanks Again, Ray

????----Not sure where you are looking , but they are shown as available where I look.-----In my opinion a 53 year old ( electric shift ) lower unit should be torn down for complete reseal / inspection.-----Or as many people do today just run it till it fails.-----Then shop for a new motor.-----The " so called seals " are in fact o-rings , if the unit was not molested.

Thanks for the info. I've looked at several websites and no one has them, I'll keep checking and if unsuccessful I have an o-ring kit.
I've owned the motor for 30 years, and currently it works just fine (other than this oil leak). It's only used 4-5 times a year. I replaced the clutch dog and gears about 7-8 years ago and at that time I replaced all the seals.
Thanks Again!

Racerone,
I have one more question, can you tell me what is the small hole just below the water intake, its about 1/8-3/16"?
