I have an old but nice 1971 with OMC V6. Im getting ready to replace the impeller..is this a huge job? After about 5 mins of running the engine gets hot and starts slowing down. If i go to an idle it keeps running but also keeps getting hotter. Is it common to lose power with overheating in these engines? Or do I need to look at other problem areas.

the impeller is a good place to start. do the exhaust risers get hot? or just the engine?

the risers get hot...pretty much everything stays hot even at an idle..the hoses from the thermostat housing..and the large hose on the engine water pump very hot too..seems to be no circulation...hope its not a huge job to change the impeller

Replace the thermostat. Locate

Replace the thermostat. Located between manifold and head. Mine was stuck shut. New impeller didn't help. Cleaning manifolds didn't help. Cracked the block anyhow. Manual says 160 degrees. Shop put in 150 deg. Was running around 190-200. Now runs at 150. Now I need to figure out how to get the starter to stop clinking and actually turn the engine over consistently.
