I have inherited a 1971 Mercur

I have inherited a 1971 Mercury 650 ser # 2998131 that I am hoping to get back in top shape. I just want to check with you guys on part # and make sure I am ordering the right parts.

Prop shaft seals # 26-76868

Internal wiring harness #52771A2

washers for the lower unit grease fill & vent screws #12-191833

I am handy with tools and do most all of my auto and small engine repairs but I have never worked on a outboard before other than changing plugs and lower unit grease. I will need to replace all the wiring as it is all just crumbling at the touch. I think if I take my time and replace one wire at the time I should be able to get through this. The motor has been in the family since my Dad bought it new in early 1972. It has been garage kept and has never been left in the water overnight. I think that it is in very good mechanical shape and I want to get it back to top shape. Any and all help and or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I bought a seloc manual for this motor but it seems a little vague on some things.

Yes, the Seloc manuals are very good, but as you state, vague in some places. If you get stuck, just ask a specific question here. There's alot of guys with a ton of experience for Mercs here on a regular basis..."

"Since it has been sitting, correct any obvious problems like the ones you have noted above.

Also, at minimum, change the impeller, give it some new plugs and clean up the ignition. This model should have a distributor - so check the cap/rotor and clean-up/replace if necessary.

Also, most likely you are going to have to pull/clean the carb(s), if not a total rebuild..."
