"I have a 1971 Johnson 6 hp 6R71G Outboard Motor. The starter pinion gear has worn teeth and needs replacement. I don't have a manual. Can anyone tell me what's involved to pull the old part off and replace it? Thanks.

"Looking at the diagram, it looks like you only have to drive out the roll pin. Are there "matching" slots on both sides of the pinion gear?"

"Best tool to drive it out wou

"Best tool to drive it out would be a roll pin punch of the correct size.

Without seeing the actual starter, it's hard to say for certain ... but it looks like it should just lift off the shaft once the pin is out.

Good luck!"

Strongly suggest that you care

Strongly suggest that you carefully remove the starter pull handle and unwind the manual starter spring before attempting that replacement. Otherwise that spring is going to unwind at lightning like speed as soon as that metal dowel is removed..... which usually results in having something break.

So to unwind the manual starte

So to unwind the manual starter spring I'd take the pull handle off and let the rope slowly pull into the winding spool till the spring is untensioned?
Thanks.

"Yes, and hold onto the starte

"Yes, and hold onto the starter gear at the same time so that it doesn't get away from you."

In order to slide the pinion g

In order to slide the pinion gear off do I have to remove the flywheel or can I can a loosen a bolt or two on the starter assembly to tilt it out to remove the gear? I don't have a puller to get the flywheel off so hoping I can get around that. Thanks.

"Looking at the parts diagrams

"Looking at the parts diagrams for your motor, it looks like the recoil starter is mounted to the intake manifold ... and there appear to be SEVEN bolts holding it on the motor. I suppose you could take the manifold off, but if it were me, I'd invest in a harmonic balancer puller and pull the flywheel off instead."
