"Hello, I have a 1971 Johnson

"Hello, I have a 1971 Johnson 60 HP outboard, last year my 20 amp main fuse kept blowing and I had some smoke coming from the control box. This year I worked on it and found all wire to be ok but found a fried rectifier. I removed it and the motor runs good but when I turn it off but keep the key on the main fuse harness gets very hot. In addition I installed a new motorola ignition sytem three years ago.
1.) If I replace the rectifier will that some my fuse and control box problem.
2.) There is a rectangular resin looking box next to the rectifier that I believe if the clipper assmbly, I heard that I need to remove now that I have the Motorola sytem, and if I do will that solve my problem?
3.) Any other ideas?
Thanks very much!!"

"Get rid of the clipper circuit and then make sure that you have 12 volts applied to the proper terminal of the pulsepack when the key is in either the start or run position only.

"I will remove that assembly tonight, by the way what is the lay persons term for the pulse pack? I am not sure what that is on the diagram. I am kind of new to this and pretty much learning on my own I really appreciate your help and just want to see some water before it gets too cold here in Ohio.
Thanks"

"Hello, I am sorry to be a pain, once I received the clipper circuit the engine turned over but would not start, is there a jumper wire that I need to install? I put the clipper back on and left the engine run at run setting and after 5 minutes the main 20 amp fuse blew again, I have not received my replacement rectifier yet so that is not currently on the engine. Please assist"

"Leave the new rectifier OFF t

"Leave the new rectifier OFF the engine until you have the wiring problem solved.

With the Clipper Circuit removed, find the wire (usually purple) that has 12 volts applied to it ONLY when the key is in the ON ot START position. THat wire must be attached to the terminal that supplies 12 volts to the pulsepack/amplifier.

Fuse blowing.... something is shorting out. Is the choke solenoid jammed?"

"Thanks, I have the manual choke only on my motor, is it possible that the starter solenoid is shorted? If possible would you know how I could test it?"

"Good morning Captain, I removed the clipper and put ignition switch to on but again it did not start, turned over though and did not blow the fuse but the fuse harness was getting very hot and so was the ignition box. I tested the voltage and was getting 12 volts to the red wire on the motorola ignition box on terminal #5. In the wiring diagram that you provided I do not see any jumper wires but I do have one on my motor, should I remove that? Can a short in the light switch cause the fuse to blow or any other suggestions?"

"On the amplifier, there shoul

"On the amplifier, there should be a "gray" (Tach Sensor) wire, a "purple" (12 volt supply) wire, a "blue" (coil primary) wire, and a "black/white" (timing sensor) wire.

I see nothing about a "RED" wire leading to the amplifier. However, if the other wires are the proper color (Blue, Gray, Black/White), I assume that the RED wire you speak of would be the 12 volt supply wire.

There whould be a purple wire on the terminal strip that has 12 volts leading to it but ONLY when the key is in the ON or START position. This wire would be the power supply to the amplifier.

A short anywhere in the system would cause the power fuse to blow byt ONLY if that short derived it's power (12v) via that fuse assembly.

What is the model number of that engine?

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay store at:

"Good morning sir,
I have checked everything again, but still blowing fuses in the on position, the engine model is 1971 60ESL710, I would like to buy parts from you if I can find out the problem, when in on position it looks like I am getting 12v to the red motorola ignition pack and also to the starter solenoid, I have disconnected all of the light wires and bilge pump wires but it still blows."
