"I have a 1971 9.5 that has been in a garage for 5 years. It ran great last time it was out. Has always been run in fresh water. What should I do to it before I try to start it again. Some are telling me to replace the impellor and do a general tune up (points, plug, condensor). What about a gummed up carb? Any thoughts?"

"Sounds like your on the right path! I would put a little oil in the cylinders and lightly pull it over to make sure its free then clean the carbs, new plugs and try it. If it starts right away then do the impeller etc."

What is the purpose or impeller replacement?

"The impeller is the business

"The impeller is the business end of the water pump and is important in the cooling of the motor. It is a good idea to replace them every few years to ensure good performance. This motor sitting for as long as it has may have resulted in the impeller drying/rotting out. If it breaks your cooling system will fail but you also may get little bits of impeller clogging the system. They are not expensive, you can do it yourself with a manual(sold here) and its part of the regular maintenace of the motor. While you have the lower unit off I would also recomend changing the seals as they're normally done every 4-5 years too.

Cheers Norm"

"When your looking it over check the hoses and wiring for cracks and wear etc. Just common sense stuff. But odds are it will spark right up, they are nice little motors!"

Thanks. Impellers are only a few bucks. You suggest changing the seals. Do they come as a kit with all I need?

"John, OMC/BRP puts together a nice waterpump kit - impeller, gaskets/seals, new cover etc.

Costs a few more bucks but worth throwing in every few years - then next change, you can simply do the impeller..."

"John, I agree with what the guys said here. I would add... Check the underside of the coils to see if they're still sealed up with the little boot for the plug wire. It gets hot under there and the top of the coils does'nt always tell the whole story. Dont forget to sync the throttle linkage to the carb, important on how well it ultimately runs...."
