1971 60hp johnson wont turn off

as the title states. 1971 60hp johnson with hydro-elec, just bought this motor 2nd hand and don't know much about them. starts and runs fine but wont turn off when i turn the key off. have to take lead off battery... any ideas???

It is not a good idea to take leads off a battery on a running motor!!.----------------------Sound like you may have a faulty ignition switch.---------------Is there any evidence of someone making wiring mods under the motor cover. Any pictures ?.

Yeah the old owner has re wired heaps and it's all over the place, all sees to work fine except it not turning off and the coil seems to get very hot when the battery is hooked up, seems like the powers always on when connected to the battery even if the key is off! I am using a good working control box that has no issues so it has to be from the motor side!

The 1971 60hp model would have Battery Capacitance Ignition, meaning that the pulsepack must have 12 volts applied to it in order for the ignition to be engaged.

There should constantly be 12 volts at the igniiton switch terminal marked "B".

There should be 12 volts applied ONLY when the key is turned to the ON or START position at the ignition switch "I" terminal, or the "A" terminal if the "A" terminals exists. A wire (usually purple or purple/green) would lead from one of these two terminals to the voltage input wire of the pulsepack (purple).

Either the ignition switch is the wrong type, is wired improperly, or the previous owner has a wire running directly from a battery lead to the voltage input terminal of the pulsepack.

NOTE: Removing the battery leads when the engine is running usually causes damage to the charging rectifier.
