Hi: I'm new to the blog. I hope someone can help. I recently changed the bearing head on a 1970 johnson 9.5. I cannot line up the whole to reinstall the screw that holds the shift lever in the gear case. The rod is too far rear word. Also, any advice on removing the old gasket sealer residue would be helpful. Thanks

Easy to do.-----Remove the lower skeg.-----------Laquer thinner cleans the sealer.--Make sure the pin in the housing engages the slot in the forward bearing when you assemble this!--Assemble gears and put the clutch dog into the forward gear.------Make sure the shift rod is fully pushed into the forward position.----That is fully pulled / pushed towards the powerhead.----Install the skeg with the sealer and spaghetti seal.----Install the 2 screws in the centre.---------Now you will see that the hole for the pivot pin should be nearly lined up.------Install the pivot pin.

Racerone: Thanks. With the engine upside down I pushed the shift rod down and pushed the clutch dog forward. As I reinstall the skeg I am about 1/4" too far rearward to allow the pivot to go through the hole. Thank you

Sorry , but the instructions are based on doing this job multiple times ( can not remember how many exactly ) since 1968 !!!----Good luck with yours !!

Forward gear is toward the nose of the gearcase. Have the clutch dog engaged with it. Forward position on the shift rod is pulled up toward the powerhead. If the hole is 1/4" off, something is wrong. If it is only off a little bit, you may have to move the rod up or down just a bit. You do have the cradle on the clutch dog....don't you?
