I have been struggling with my 1970 4 HP Johnson outboard (Model 4W70e When I run a timing light, the strobe seems to be way past the 2 timing marks on the engine. I have tried setting the points .20. .18 .16 and .12 in an effort to move the timing mark. That has not changed the location.
I have new plugs, which has great spark when I turn the engine over.
I rebuilt the carb, which was gunked up, as well as the fuel pump. The fuel pump throws good spurts now.
I did take the reeds plate out. I cleaned it with carb cleaner, but it seemed to be fine.
I did get it to fire once but that is it.
Any suggestions for me? I am stumped.
