"Just recently got a 1970 60HP
"Just recently got a 1970 60HP Johnson "Hydro Electric Drive" outboard (model 60esl70). Was running a little rough at first, had been sitting around for a few years unused. Now I cleaned the plugs & carbs and have it running good in a test tank... runs fine at idle, Hot light comes on just after it goes into gear. Did seem to be a water stream from the outlet when I first started working on it, not anymore.
Tested compression: looked good (cold reading of 130lbs on all 3 cylinders) From what I have been reading it seems like it is probably a water pump/impeller, internal water flow, or thermostat problem. When I took off the thermo cover to check that, there seemed to be nothing there, where I think the thermostat should have been. It should be sitting right below that cover, right? I also wonder if anyone could give me a basic walk-thru of taking off the lower unit to replace the impeller. Do I need to rain the gear oil or anything first? Is it a complete pain to do?
One more question: does anyone know where I might be able to track down a full water pump kit for this motor? I seem able to find the impeller ok, haven't run across the housing anywhere yet.
These threads all seem very informative, and I hope that somebody out there can help me out on this one. Thanks in advance. Already July... NEED TO GET OUT THERE IN THE WATER!!"
