1970 60hp Johnson Outboard shifting problems

Hi All,

I've was able to narrow down a previous shifting problem to the solenoid in the lower unit. I tracked down some parts and replaced the solenoid but destroyed the paper gasket while taking it off. I didn't have another gasket but did have some Permatex gasket maker. Due to my impatience I used the gasket maker, I put the solenoids back in the lower unit and put the lower unit back on the boat. I filled it with the correct type of oil and tried to run it. It started up and was in neutral right away, I shifted it into reverse and that worked real well also. When I shifted into forward gear nothing happened. I checked the the voltage at the connectors and there was no voltage running to either solenoid with it in forward gear yet it stayed in neutral. Also, when the engine is shut off it is in forward gear.

My question is, does anybody know if using the Permatex gasket maker instead of the paper gasket would cause forward gear to not work? My thinking is that the difference in height of the two gaskets might effect the way it shifts.

I doubt it. So you said it stayed in neutral or reverse when shifted to forward, and there was no voltage at that time? But it went into forward when you shut the engine down? That sounds like something is binding the solenoid plungers, holding the flow control valves closed. Or they could be out of adjustment.

Either that, or the piston is sticking in the oil pump.
