Hi all. I just bought a 1969 9.8 Merc Kiekhaefer that seems to run and shift well. After running it in the "bucket", it seems to drip water and a bit of oil from behind the prop. I can understand the oil being a seal but, should water be dripping from there? I appreciate any input.

Those motors came with carbon steel shafts.-----They tend to rust where the oil seals ride.------Water gets into the lower unit.-----But I can not keep an eye on the oil for you !--------Check the lower unit for water.----Or do a pressure test on the lower unit oil seals.---All part of learning about motors and owning an older motor !

You just said it. Sad to say this is the first outboard for an old man. Don't know much out them, more an outboard guy. Just picked it up, for use on a dinghy and want to make it right before using it. The oil is full and appears to be water free.Going to take it to my local shop and have it checked out. Thanks.
