1969 Johnson 6hp water pump

Changed the impeller today on my 1969 Johnson 6 hp and when started it, it is not pumping water, Is the impeller the same as the water pump and where does the water exit? thought it was 1/2 way up the prop shaft but I am not seeing anything... Thank you in advance
