Hello Everyone,
I recently bought a 1969 18HP Evinrude and when I removed the flywheel to set the timing I noticed that the Points dont line up. Is this normal or something to worry about?
Also the Brass tube in the middle of the carburetor looks a bit mangled on the end. Does this affect the performance of the carb?

Hi, I carefully bend the points so they line up as well as hit each other squarely. Instead of the oil wiper I run a dab of synthetic grease. Use a tiny bit of grease on the points post too. Nice picture, by the way. That screw should have a washer under it also......you know that goofy looking bent one? Guess its not the end of the world if its not there.......I'm just a detail man.
Shouldn't be a problem with the carb, just so the opening isn't restricted. Who was working on that? I'm doing a carb from an integral tank 4.5 now........how in the h... can these guys ruin stuff like this? It is truly amazing.

All the books and traditions say those points are no good. But we know they will work, right? They actually only make contact in a small spot. It would be nice if that spot were in the middle, but it'll work wherever it is. Now if we are talking about longevity that's another story. Hey, they'll probly need revisiting before they are worn out anyway.

Probably sierra points get some OEM points and condensers with the BRP name on the package. Not a big fan of aftermarket ignition components of any kind. Spend the dime and get OEM parts!

Those are OEM points in the OP picture. Witness the OMC trademark stamped on the arm. Just goes to say that stuff isn't as good as it used to be.

I have to say, nothing is perfect, but I make 'em run like new or they don't go off the tank. Rarely do I get a set of points that I don't "dial in".
