Hi, I just purchased a 6hp fisherman. I plan on going through the whole motor to make sure everything is mechanically sound. Here is the story, I bought the motor thinking it was a 6hp Evinrude fisherman, When I got it home I found the tag on the motor bracket and the Model number was 5524R meaning it was actually a 1962 5.5 hp. But the motor cowl had a six and the cowl just didn't look like other 1962 ones I've seen. so I dug further looking at the freeze plug finding the model number 6902M meaning it was a 1969 6hp. I assume that that someone put an older lower unit on the 69 upper. I got the motor running somewhat it only ran fully open wouldn't idle. while it was running in a bucket it wasn't pissing so I quickly shut it down so it wouldn't burn up. I figured the impeller was bad so I knew I needed to pull the lower. I ended up having to pull the powerhead to get the lower unit off further proving the lower was a 62 and not a 69. Here is were the questions start. The impeller is good, no clogs in the tattletale so what else would cause the motor not to cool itself? also while puling the lower I noticed that the spring and washers that were supposed to be at the top of the rod were all at the bottom and the pin that holds them up was sheered off. Question 2 what does that stuff (the spring, washers, seal and o rings) that are supposed to be on the top of the rod do? Would this cause my overheating problem? Question 3, is it ok to have a 1962 5.5hp lower attached to a 1969 6hp upper or am I just wasting my time with this motor? I have ordered all the new parts a carb kit and a Manuel. also compression on both cylinder's is at 90, is that ok? Thank you in advance for the Knowledge I'm hoping to gain.
