I am a first time boat owner and its a fixer to boot. I have a 1969 Merc 650 and a spare for parts. I also have the repair manual but I still cant find what I need to do. I am changing out the lower units because the housing was broken on mine. I am not sure of the directions to install the following parts .

As you can see the pieces (name?)with the arrows are installed opposite of one another.

The white one was installed that way when I removed the lower unit. The black one was on there the way it is but it was removed from the motor when I purchased it. My question is of the two which one is installed right? My second question is the other part in the picture marries up with it and what direction does it go on? And my last question is does anything need to be turned into a timed position before bolting it back up?

Sorry I am a novice but would really like to get on the water to fish. I am sure I will have more questions so thanks for any and all help in advance.

Re: 65 merc lower unit help

Don't you love these old motors:D.
The white bit in pic 1 is the reverse lock cam. This pushes up the rod that locks down the motor while in neutral and reverse. It slides up of the lower shift shaft with the high point facing the front of the lwr unit, ramp on the left. There is a plastis spacer that goes under it.It's got two lugs on it.
The other arrow is pointing to where your water pump should go.Basically, you remove the one on the other unit,it looks in good shape, change the gaskets, seals and the impeller,it has the wings on it,you'll see when you remove the pump housing.Make sure when you are installing the new impeller that the wings are turned in the right direction by turning the drive shaft clockwise.
The white thing in pic 2 and the black in pic 3 are the same thing and don't go on the lower unit. You only need one and it fits up on the mid section. It is a spacer to hold the shift rod and reverse lock rod in line.
I have tried to upload a pic of where it goes and one of the reverse cam.Good luck and enjoy the learning curve.:D
