"Just posted, but can't find it. New to this forum, may have done something wrong. Question is about a '69 55h 3 cylinder Rude. After skiing for about hour and a half it quits and won't start for about a half hour. Was told that the distributer is weak and arcs internally when hot. Replaced distrubuter with one from Sierra. Seemed fixed, but after kids skied they complained about similar problem, except it wouldn't restart after cooling. This is now my winter project as we replaced the engine. I just started it, but can't run it beccause it is winter in Wi. Wondering if I should start with an impeller, and thermostate? Thanks For Your help."

"i would guess it to be the am

"i would guess it to be the amplifier,or poss a coil acting up,.if u repl the amp,u r to repl AMP & COIL.if it runs good, otherwise,i'd say ur prob would not be under flywheel...if the anti-rev spring, gets loose, and flops around, its poss for it to be causing u prob's...u need to ck the fire when it does this,..and u r correct about it arcing,..those ign,can be a big PITA.,..good old solid eng's tho."

"i am curious, about exactly what 'distributer' u repl,..i am not aware of sierra making those caps and rotors???"

"Thanks for the response. Here

"Thanks for the response. Here's more info that I didn't include to keep from being too long on initial post. When this engine started this I had a mechanic explain how to install a 'car coil' in place of the amp. And maybe I should just replace the coil I have in it. As for the Sierra distributer, I changed that about 12 years ago and it's possible they don't stock them anymore. But I did replace the 'distributer and rotor' from Sierra. I'm not familar with the 'anti-rev spring.' Where is that? (This is now a winter time project as I'm looked at it hanging there long enough.) I appreciate the help! Thank You"

"ahhhhhhhh yes,the ol car coil

"ahhhhhhhh yes,the ol car coil trick...seen it a few times.....i bel i rem burning points up fast...still not sure about what u repl 12 yrs ago,i dont believe sierra ever made those parts,but,..totally irrelevent, was just wondering.anti rev spring,is a spring, that fits around the crankshaft, under the dist cap.its purpose,is to keep the eng fr running backwards, should the eng try that,it grounds out the points.may not even be there any more.i cant help u much w/that set-up..i have seen it,know it wks,but as mentioned,i think i rem that it burns points up.u may need a resister,if u dont have one."

"I appreciate your patience wi

"I appreciate your patience with me. I will yank the flywheel and look at the points, and check for the rev spring. All the 'kids' I referred to earlier are out of state so I'm trying to get clarifation of the experience they had the last time this engine was used. The last thing I did to this engine was to rebuild the carburetors, and it sounds like I have 'em out of sync, as the power stopped at about 3/4 throttle. It bogged severly at WOT, but developed power at 3/4 open. Makes me wonder if I have a float closing too soon as well. Any thoughts on that? As for the car coil, there is a large or long ballist resistor between the + & - terminals of the coil. If size means anything, it is as long as the coil is wide. I really appreciate being able to bounce these off someone with a solid background. Thanks again."

"Forgot to ask in last post. S

"Forgot to ask in last post. Sorry. Sierra being an after market source of parts, are much cheaper than OMC. But have you been happy with the quality? And I'm only asking. Have had no reason to question the quality other than the idea that you get what you pay for. I'm looking at replacing the impeller and the price difference between the two is significant. I ordered a starter solenoid from Sierra for about half price, but it hasn't arrrived yet. THANK YOU!"

"the only problem,..serious pr

"the only problem,..serious problem,i ever had, with sierra parts,..was in the early 80's...the water pump hub, would come unattached, from the rubber, just spinning...i prob had 8-10 do that, and sierra sent the closest rep to my shop...they pd me for the imp's and the labor to redo all those..in the last 3 yrs,i had prob's w/tnt mtrs...other than that,i use sierra ALOT,...except for factory, specific parts..."
