1968 Johnson 6hp Compression Test

Hi,

I have a 1968 6hp Johnson motor, doesn't want to start. Tested the compression and got 85psi on the top cylinder and 80 on the bottom. I'm completely new to outboard motors. Do I have a compression issue? What is the standard psi range I should expect to see?

Any help is much appreciated!

Those readings are satisfactory and well within 10% of each other

over 60 should run

over 80 should run well

over 100 very good

over 120 ... your gauge is wrong!

Thanks vics and kimcrwbr1, I really appreciate the help. I'll let you know what I get with the spark test, probably won't get to it until later in the week.
