1968 Johnson 100 power pack choices eally need some advice and help

"I have been restoring a 1968 Alumacraft Queen Merrie which has a 68 Johnson 100 model V4TL-14B. I have completed the boat and now am going through the motor.
Maybe I am taking on a project that will cost more than it is worth in this motor?? The motor has good compression shows very little corrosion or wear of the external pieces. I am planning on going through the lower end,rebuilding or replacing the water pump, rebuilding the carbs and doing a good tune up.
My main question is about the power pack which is OMC part number 0398362 and is available at a cost of $483. There are several after market products with sketchy availability for about 1/2 the cost. In looking at CDI PN-113-8362 it lists a bunch of OMC power pack numbers that it replaces including part number 385034 which Marine engine carries for $100 which works way better for my budget given that I am doing this project while I am looking for work. Yes, I am feeling the impact of the economy...Is this part(OMC 385034) also compatible with my motor?? If not, what is the best product to use as a replacement?Is there any concerns with after market power packs?Or should I just pay the big bucks for the OMC part???
Any thoughts or advice for me as I get going on this project would be greatly appreciated.

CDI products are excellent. I

CDI products are excellent. I use them all the time. There is no good reason to go with the OMC part.

"Hope I'm not beating a dead horse here but does it make sense that if the CDI part number is a direct replacement for my original part number and lists several other OMC part numbers it also replaces that those OMC parts would in turn be compatable with each other?

The Sierra 18-5748 powerpack is the interchange number for the OMC 398362 powerpack. Check to see if it is still available.

"}The Sierra 18-5748 is still available. What is interesting was that in researching the Sierra part I noticed it listed a number of OMC part numbers that it works as a direct replacement for.
Among those numbers is 385034 which lists for $100 through Marine engines which is way cheaper than the Sierra or CDI after market power packs.
The big question is if the after market products list both OMC numbers as being able to be replaced by the same part number would the OMC parts also be interchangeable with each other??The savings would be apx $160 if that be the case... This particular motor has a pulse transformer that stands alone and an electronic pack made up of a tranformer capacitor, and electronic switch. I just do not know enough about how these work to be sure I am not going down the wrong path in trying to save some extra dollars but it does make some sense to me that if the Sierra 18-5748 works for both the OMC 382478 and the OMC 385034 that they would then in turn work as replacements for each other. There are apx 12 different OMC numbers that are able to be replaced by CDI part number 113-8362 Sierra is similar prestolite and mallory also have cross referenced products but from what I am able to tell are out of stock.
With the stock parts becoming harder to find and what appears to be a rather large number of part numbers that the replacement Sierra and CDI parts work for if they are indeed interchangeable with each other it would be good for older motor restorotion guys to have that info.

The confusion comes in, that is I believe it may be confusing you, is that the individual powerpacks all supersede up to the part number of 398362 which is a universal powerpack that has separate installation instructions for the various OMC hp engines.

I use the term powerpack here but to clarify, actually any pack that requires battery voltage to function is a pulsepack or amplifier.

On a separare note..... short paragraphs would make for easier reading. Long paragraphs have a tendency to have everything flow together, really makes for difficult reading."
