1968 9.9hp Chrysler outboard

So, yesterday I was driving around and saw a little hole in the wall shop, there sitting was a 9.9 Chrysler with a gas tank. I got it for $100, now I have to figure out what parts I can find... Its a 1968, model # 901 serial # 3412. The only thing I could find by these numbers was that it is a 1968 model. Any help on this subject is appreciated.

What you have there is a rare breed indeed.
I think the hump on top of the motor housed an electric starter.

Would you say that this is where the electric starter would be? I can find parts around where I live, just finding an parts diagram for this specific model sounds like its gonna be hard...

Also, is it safe to use some starter fluid on this??

No that's where a pull rope would be hooked up.
Your motor the cover was from an electric start.
Maybe somewhere along the way it was changed or lost?
The starter would be along the side of the motor.

If??? You need any starting fluid then something's wrong.
Check the compression, check the fuel pump diaphragm.
Clean the carb and make sure there is spark on the plugs.
New plugs too.
 
There is the pull cord mechanism, and after I posted about the starter fluid, I tried cranking it and nothing happened. I pulled the fuel pump and it was all gunked up, and I pulled the plugs and the inards are all built up with deposits. I have concluded that this will be worked on over the winter... Full tear down, cleaning, and paint.

Pull the plugs and spray some WD-40 or PB Blaster in the holes and in the carbs throat.
Marvel Mystery Oil will help too.
 
Hi everyone, I finally got around to working on this motor... I am in need of a carb kit for a Tillotson MD 144A carb, I cant seem to find a kit that fits this thing...
 
Setting the carb:
Motor running, warm and in gear.
The air screw (usually top, front of the carb) turn out 1 and 1/2 turn.
Then slowly turn in 1/8th turn.
Wait for 10 seconds. (that burns the gas at that setting)
Then repeat the procedure till the motor bucks, kicks, stalls then turn it out 1/2 turn.

Any more missing, check the reeds behind the carb.

I have the carb adjusted, runs smooth at low rpm and high rpm but after I take the rpms up and back down it seems to bog down and quits... then it won't start for nothing... the reed plates on the fuel pump are closed when I pull off the pump. I'm at my wits end on this thing....
 
Thinking about it i pulled them once after the first time I started it and noticed that they were wet a little and thought nothing of it... So I guess ill check the fuel pump diaphragm sometime.

They don't burn clean like a 4 stroke.
The reeds in the pump(got a pic) should be closed unless the motors running.
The getting warm and stalling sounds like it's overheating??
Change the impeller?
Then check the float in the bowl.

The reeds on the pump are closed, ive checked them twice now, I guess I need to change the impeller... The float is fine, I cleaned and put new gaskets on the carb a long time ago.
 
Well! After a hiatus with this motor... I am pleased to say that I have it running and pumping water reliably!!! Now, I only have to find a replacement propeller and fix the pull cord winder. :D

Hi all. My first time on this site. I have a 1969 9.9 HP Chrysler. It's in good shape for the age and runs well/ok. I was going to use it, but got a steal on a new 9.9 Mercury.

Anyone know the best way to go about selling it, and a good price to ask? I'm in Phoenix, AZ. Thanks a lot.
 
First you need to start your own thread.
Second they don't want anyone trying to sell on here :(

Facebook has a section called Marketplace.
Then there's Ebay then Craigslist and any newspaper.

It's 50+ years old so you won't get much.
Just clean and paint it and make it look good.
Try not to paint the cover unless you can match the color,
they don't sell as good when they have the cover painted???

Wow that is a pretty slick little motor I'm just getting ready to come around to start working online what I need to do is go through it before I get any major parts but I'd like to find the lens that goes on the top mine has disintegrated but the metal is still there and parts of the actual cover we're sitting down inside the sides of the engine so I picked them all out not enough to do anything with or try to put back together would love to have a new light lens after I go through the engine I'm definitely going to put a new impeller in it as well it's been sitting for a million years in Arizona and it has the electric strike motor on it pretty amazing and it came on a Chrysler 22 sailboat and well I'm going to see what I can do with this old junk and go forward I'm going to give this guy over Michigan a call too see what he might have for me sounds like he's the king of these old Motors thanks for the information I'll get back if the thing spins through I'm going to put some knuckle buster juice on the spark plugs that have been sitting it for a hundred years and see if I can get them to come loose and with the plugs out I'm going to see if I can spin it through by hand and then if it actually moves this will be a beautiful thing and I'll put it in gear and see if I can spin it through and see if any of the gears work or if we're all jammed up who knows maybe I got lucky we'll see but just starting into it I'll be asking for advice
