"Hey guys and gals. I just acquired a very sweet 9 hp 1967 Ted Williams motor... the guy said it kept shearing his "homemade" flywheel keys but otherwise runs great. Anyone happen to have the authentic, correct flywheel key for this motor? I sure need one and would appreciate any parts lists or info on where to get parts for it. Sears does not list parts for this one."

"The flywheel key on most motors is to position the flywheel for ignition. So make a key , check for proper fit, lap the flywheel to the crank with some valve grinding compound and away you go."

Yep. The problem is that it keeps shearing the flywheel keys that the guy I got the motor from was putting in it. Maybe he was doing something wrong. I just thought that if I got an OEM key that it would possibly hold a little better.

The key only positions the fly

The key only positions the flywheel it does NOT drive the flywheel.

SSparky... then something must be wrong for him to tell me that he went thru about 10 flywheel keys. I've never heard of "lapping" a flywheel to a crank. I think I know what you mean ... but for educational purposes would you explain how you would do that (or how I would do that)?

Simple you get some valve grin

Simple you get some valve grinding compound and put it in the tapers.Spin it back and forth/ turn it and turn it some more.you will see more and more contact between the two tapers as high spots are worn away. Now when you torque the flywheel down the tapers are locked and will do the driving. This is standard procedure on high horsepower outboards such as OMC 235 hp as early as 82 (mine)

Thanks SSparky. I was thinking correctly then. I'll try this but I bet there was some kind of problem or it would have never sheared the first flywheel key.
