1967 MC-1, Ram question.

1966 MC-1 120hp. Rams are the single hose type. I have the boat all covered and winterized. The out drive is off and in storage. Before I took the batt out I moved the rams to the fully retracted position. Covered each ram with plastic and tied them off to the stern.
We had a warm afternoon last week and now the rams are extended about 5 inches. I figured the oil warmed up and expanded but I did not expect the rams to be pushed out so far even with no weight on them.
Would like to have the rams retracted so the ram is not exposed for 4-5 months. Is it as simple as retracting the rams and then tieing them down?

They are tied up. Pointing up at about a 40 degree angle. Imagine the outdrive in the up position. Out drive is off, there is no weight/resistance on the rams.

Post a picture, your stuff is to damn old to remember what it looks like, 33 years ago most of us were popping zits not trim rams.........

WHat is a "single hose type". Do you mean only one HYDRAULIC line to the trim ram?

No idea what that is..........

If I remember and I dont think I do, your trim rams do NOT have a memory piston like newer versions. Nothing to keep the trim piston in place, Also there may be some bleed back thru the valving due to the trim down would be higher pressure line and it may be feeding back thru the trim up circut causing the rams to extend.......

If your rams have TWO HYDRAULIC lines EACH, one for up and one for down ( on both rams) like most all rams do then it may be a internal leak by the piston seal/oring inside the ram. Again the trim down line may be under more pressure and if it is leaking by the piston or the pump valving it can only go in one other direction and that would be trim up..........

The weight of the outdrive may be enough to overcome the bleed by where ever it is......

You could break loose the lines at the pump and relieve the pressure or at least see if there is any pressure.

Trim pumps and valving systems are a difficult issue as fixing them is a very unusual thing, typically replace, Rams can be serviced easily though.

tough one........

"Do you mean only one HYDRAULIC line to the trim ram?" Yes, one Hydraulic line to each trim ram.
I will get the Kodak out an see if I can post some pictures.

I have put the batt back on and trimmed down three times. A couple days go by and the rams are fully extended. I have loosended the line on the ram and released the small amount of pressure that was on it. I have loosened the supply line on the pump and there was no pressure on it. Yet the rams continue to fully extend after a few days of hanging in the 30 degree up position.
Now this is not an issue or problem. I know what to do to resovle this. I was just hoping someone might have run across this before and could share that it was the "criss cross kahnuder valve was in filtration bypass" or something to that effect.
My neighbor's wife, who has been observing the entire build, put it all into perspective last week. She said, "stop whinning like a little girl. You know what to do, so shutup and fix it." Nothing like a woman's heed to set a fellar straight.
This thread is closed, I am putting the fix to it today.
