" I have a 1967 60 horse Johnson that is baffeling my mechanic. idles fines, revs up good (when not in gear), shifts into gear, will only go 5 - 8 knots at WOT. Lower Unit was exchanged, timing checked, carbs cleaned/checked, compression checked, real clean motor ...any ideas? "

"John.... If the engine has proper compression, spark, and the carburetor is clean and adjusted properly, there is no reason why the engine would not perform.

Which one of the above is not as it should be?

At WOT, is the engine actually turning its top rpms, or are the rpms very low? Keep in mind that any engine will rev up when it's not in gear, even a V/4 such as yours that might be running on three (3) cylinders.

Give us a little more detail on your problem.

" Hey Joe, thanks for the quick response! At WOT, is seems the engine is not running at top rpms. Almost sounds like it is bogged down version of half throttle, if that makes sense. When engine is not fully warmed up, the engine will quit (bog out) after engaging throttle and up-throttling to half throttle. As a post script, the engine has not been used for two years. "

"John..... In all probability, from what you said, the carburetors are fouled, clogged, gummed up. The cure would be to remove, clean, and rebuild them.

" Thansk Joe. I will have the maechanic take a second look at them, as he said they were as clean as a whistle! Someone suggested to make sure the crank case was not taking in air??? "

" I had a similar problem with a 35 hp mercury. It would rev just fine, but when you went to wot, it seemed as if it ran at half throttle. As a matter of fact, it only went to about 3000rpm. It turned out to be the switchbox. I replaced it and it worked fine. "

" John, I have a '66 60HP Evinrude that displayed that exact symptom. It turned out to be a kink in the fuel line between the fuel pump and the carburetor. The fuel line was too short and when the pump was bolted to the block it forced the line into too sharp a bend and restricted fuel flow. I removed the mounting bolts and let it dangle and what do you know, right up on plane it went. Nice cheap fix! Hope that's all that's wrong. Good luck. "
