Hi all, I have a 1966 Starflight Evinrude outboard and just recently the coil which I believe is original quit. Do you know if I can use a part other than the OEM part? OEM is just a little expensive And there appears to be some inboard motor coils that may work although they are not an exact replica. Thanks for any guidance you can provide. It’s an awesome motor. Ran great until it didn’t.

Maybe the rotor in the distributor is bad?----See if spark comes out of the coil.----Note some plug wires are screwed into place on these motors.

I don’t think I’d be able to generate a spark since the boat doesn’t even sputter. If I turn the key in the ignition, it does literally nothing. Is there a manual way to test the coil to see if I can get a spark?

Is the distributor drive belt there and turning the distributor ?----Are you saying that the starter will not crank it over ??----Just 3 screws to remove distributor cap.-----Inspect / clean / set points.---Remove sparkplugs.---Remove wire from coil.-------Turn key to ON.---- Turn flywheel with a socket or rope.----see if spark comes from the coil.

Of course it has a solenoid.----Find the red cable on the battery.----Follow that cable to the motor.-----Cable goes to one side of solenoid.-----Or find cable on starter as it goes to other side of solenoid.----I think I have one of those motors in the shed.----Sorry I can not see or touch your motor.----Few shops will help you with that so you have to learn to work on it yourself !
