Hi guys, I don’t know if I’m double posting or not since I can’t find my other post.

Anyway, I’ve taking my outboard apart completely from top to bottom to try and make it as up to date as possible.

I took off the flywheel to make sure the points were set correctly, or needed to be replaced, when I noticed one of the ignition coils was cracked and both wires were corroded to the point of being detached completely. It makes sense that the 2nd cylinder wasn’t firing.

I’ve done some tracking for a replacement and I’ve found 2 replacements on eBay for about $100 each, one is 398-2568a1 and the other 398-2568t1.

My question is if it is possible to repair the coil to save money? Or would it be possible to use a similar coil that I’ve seen online. They say they’re for other outboards like Johnson, but they look the same, and measure out to be the same. Would something be harmed if used them, or would it simply not work?

I will have more questions down the line for this restoration, and E34BF155-A3E1-4E27-BD60-94BD8703C608.jpegI will try to respond with solutions that worked.

Shipping a used coil to you would would not be cost efficient , Sorry.----Keep your eye on E-BAY I think they show up from time to time.

Thanks anyway

I just had to order one for a 1967 39 I'm working on. Yes, had to bite the bullet and spend the bucks to get a new one. Get the coils and condensers tested before buying new parts. (Both getting very hard to find.) Cracked coils can be repaired with Corona dope if you can find it, assuming the primary and secondary windings are in tact and it passes the load test. Hopefully you can find an old dealership out there that still has a Merc-o-Tronic 88 or 98 to load test the coils and check the condenser capacitance, should be .14-.2 microfarads.
