We were getting ready to go to the river yesterday. I deceided to top off the battery with the charger. Four hours later the charger finished its job. Needless to say we cancelled our trip. Good thing too cause a freak storm blew through that was real nasty.
This is a complete rebuild. Everything is new or reconditioned. The motor has only 5.6 hours on it. We have been to the lake twice and both times everything went great.
I just read through a bunch of posts. Didn't find what I was looking for. I want to check that the battery is getting the charge it is suppose to be getting. The volt meter shows 13.6 to almost 14 volts when underway. Where do I attach my meter to check the battery is getting the juice I am expecting.
She starts fine on the muffs and all the electrics work AOK. Just really concerned the new battery took 4 hours to charge after only 5 hours of run time.
Keep in mind she is new. Last week we did a number of high speed runs then idle runs. You know, changing the rpms to seat the rings. Still need to check the charging. With all the barge traffic the river is no place to break down. Lord I miss the gulf.
Thanks Yall.

Battery 101

a battery typically has 6 cells
each cell on a new/good battery is worth 2.1 volts DC
that equals 12.6 volts dc

in a good chargiing circut at 1500 -2000 rpms with NO accessories on including NO blower you should see 13.5-14.5 ish volts.

If you want to check the battery connections directly you get a volt meter, set it to DC 20/50 volts setting, what ever your meter has but above 15 volts anyways.

put the red lead to + and the black lead to - rev the engine to 2000 and take a reading.

do not take a reading from the back of the altinator, take it from the battery + or the big starter terminal.

Thanks yall. That is the info I need. When the ribs are finished I can put her on the muffs and check the system. This will also keep me from falling asleep in front of the tube.
